Other Treatment Technologies
Aerojet environmental engineers are evaluating the ability to destroy contaminants in groundwater WITHOUT pumping the water from the ground. This insitu technology involves injecting small amounts of various carbon sources, such as alcohol or corn syrup, into the ground where native bacteria use the carbon to break down perchlorate and TCE into harmless compounds.
Insitu bioremediation does not generate waste that will later need special handling and disposal. Also, it does not require extraction and subsequent discharge of treated groundwater, thus conserving this water as a resource.
