GenCorp has a long corporate history, incorporating in 1915 as The General Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. The company was one of the early conglomerates, having diverse business interests, including tires, chemicals and plastics, aerospace, transportation, media, resort property, and soft drink bottling, to name a few.
Over time, GenCorp sold, discontinued or spun-off many of these businesses. One of the discontinued operations was in Lawrence, Massachusetts, in the northeast corner of the state. The Lawrence location, acquired by GenCorp in 1954, was a textile mill and later a producer of rubber and plastics products.
Today, GenCorps revitalization efforts in Lawrence stand as a national model of Brownfields redevelopment. Since the Lawrence locations closing in 1981, GenCorp has worked proactively with civic and community leaders to address potential environmental, safety and health concerns. We are proud of our stewardship in this community.
